Eternal Question
Eternal Question is the fourth work in my ongoing homage to the music of virtuoso Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and percussionist Will Clipman.
Inspired by Eternal Question, the seventh track on their album Silence and Space, this artwork continues my exploration of the relationship between music, visual expression and the intuitive creative process.
The album captures an extraordinary performance by Nakai and Clipman inside the TANK, a famously resonant, empty water tank in the high desert of northwestern Colorado.
Within this unusual acoustic space, sound takes on a life of its own, lingering, expanding and revealing subtle layers of rhythm, silence and resonance.
Translating Sound into Colour and Movement
As with the previous three works in this series, Silence and Space, Elemental Fusion and Inward Journey, Eternal Question emerged through deep listening, meditation and intuition.
Rather than attempting to illustrate the music, I allowed its rhythms, atmosphere and emotional qualities to guide the movement of colour, texture and mark making.
Organic Textures and Unexpected Rhythms
Rich emerald and forest greens mingle with coral pinks and earthy golds, forming a densely textured field that seems to shift and breathe.
The colours gather, disperse and reappear, creating an organic sense of movement and an ever changing visual landscape.
Beneath this expressive surface, strong horizontal bands introduce a contrasting rhythm.
Their measured lines and layered colours create a sense of pause and structure, setting the energy of the upper field against a quieter, more deliberate visual language.
For me, this interplay reflects the way music can move between spontaneity and restraint, complexity and simplicity, sound and silence.
An Invitation to Pause and Reflect
Eternal Question is an invitation to slow down, look beyond the immediate surface and allow your own interpretations to emerge.
Like the music that inspired it, the artwork offers no fixed narrative or definitive answer.
Instead, it leaves room for uncertainty, contemplation and personal discovery.
Perhaps some questions are not meant to be answered. Perhaps their value lies in the way they keep us listening, exploring and remaining open to the mysteries that surround us.
Available as a 🔹 premium canvas giclée print 🔹 produced to preserve the richness, fine texture and depth of the original artwork. Choose from stretched or framed options, including elegant floater frames that create a contemporary floating effect around the artwork.
