Elemental Fusion | Music Inspired Abstract Art

Elemental Fusion is the second artwork in my Homage to R. Carlos Nakai series, created in response to the second track from Silence and Space by R. Carlos Nakai and Will Clipman.

The music became the starting point rather than a soundtrack to the work. I listened repeatedly, allowing the sounds, rhythms, resonance and spaces within the music to gradually find their way into the painting.

Rather than attempting to illustrate the music, I wanted to discover as I have with most of my works, what it might become visually when translated through colour, texture, movement and intuition.

Elemental Fusion is a celebration of that meeting point.

The track is the second of nine constituent pieces from Silence and Space, an album that grew from a 2018 performance by R. Carlos Nakai and Will Clipman inside the extraordinary acoustic environment of the TANK Center for Sonic Arts in Rangely, Colorado.

Nakai's Native American flute and Clipman's percussion inhabit a space where resonance and silence become an integral part of the music.

From Sound to Abstract Expression

With this series, my process begins in the sandbox, AKA the studio, with meditation and deep listening.

I do not begin with an image in mind, nor do I try to translate particular musical passages into literal shapes. Instead, I listen until the music begins to create an atmosphere within me.

Colours emerge. Textures suggest themselves. Marks become quieter or more insistent. Layers are built, disrupted and rebuilt.

The painting develops through that conversation between sound and intuition.

For Elemental Fusion, the intense warmth of orange, ochre, yellow and red creates an almost elemental field, while the horizontal bands introduce another kind of language. They suggest rhythm, interruption, structure and movement without describing anything recognisable.

The surface shifts between density and openness, allowing small details to emerge from beneath the larger fields of colour.

It is deliberately tactile and atmospheric, inviting the eye to move across the surface in much the same way that the ear moves through music.

Where Sound, Silence and Space Meet

The title Elemental Fusion comes from the music itself, but the idea also became a way of thinking about the painting.

Fusion suggests separate things coming together and becoming something else. In the artwork, colour, texture, line and space gradually merge into a single visual field. Nothing remains completely isolated. Each layer affects what surrounds it.

This became particularly important while working on the piece. I wanted the artwork to retain something of the spaciousness found within Silence and Space, while allowing colour to become more physical, energetic and immediate.

The result is not an illustration of the track. It is a visual response to listening.

The Second Edition in the Homage Series

This artwork forms part of an ongoing body of work created as a homage to R. Carlos Nakai, beginning with the music of Silence and Space and the remarkable collaboration between Nakai and Will Clipman.

The album contains nine individual musical pieces, followed by the extended 56 minute title work Silence and Space. Elemental Fusion runs for approximately five minutes and twenty seconds and features R. Carlos Nakai on Native American flute and Will Clipman on percussion. The album was released on September 2, 2025.

For me, this series is an opportunity to listen differently.

Each track becomes a doorway into another visual space. I am not attempting to reproduce what I hear. I am allowing the music to become colour, texture, atmosphere and gesture, then following the painting wherever it wants to go.

Elemental Fusion is therefore both an artwork and an act of listening.

A quiet conversation between sound and colour.

Between movement and stillness.

Between the physical surface of paint and the intangible space created by music.

Music Inspired Abstract Art

Elemental Fusion continues my exploration of music inspired abstract art, intuitive painting and contemporary mixed media practice, creating a visual language where music can be experienced through colour, texture and space rather than through representation.

As a contemporary Australian artist, I am particularly interested in that uncertain territory where one creative language crosses into another. Music cannot be seen, just as a painting cannot be heard, yet both can create atmosphere, emotion, tension, movement and silence.

This artwork is my response to that possibility.

Elemental Fusion is the second visual response in my Homage to R. Carlos Nakai series.

A painting born from listening.

A painting shaped by sound.

A painting that asks you to slow down and listen with your eyes.
