I know there are many colours living within this abstract artwork, yet it was blue that I kept hearing intuitively as I worked. The greens, reds and yellows became important voices within the painting, but the deeper presence of blue gradually began to take over.
As I listened again and again to Jon Hassell’s beautiful instrumental piece Amsterdam Blue, its dreamy, atmospheric sound seemed to find its way directly into the painting. I found myself responding not by trying to illustrate the music, but by allowing its mood, rhythm and spaciousness to influence my gestures, colour and mark making.
