Hózhó Nihí Déyá – In Beauty, We Travel

A Music-Inspired Abstract Artwork in My Homage to R. Carlos Nakai

Hózhó Nihí Déyá – In Beauty, We Travel is the sixth artwork in my ongoing homage to the extraordinary music of R. Carlos Nakai, the renowned Native American flute virtuoso.

Inspired by the track of the same name, this work continues my exploration of the meeting place between music, abstraction and personal expression.

There is something about this piece that feels particularly resolved to me. Of all the artworks I've created for this series so far, this is the one I feel most strongly connected to.

It brings together elements I've been exploring across the previous works, yet takes them somewhere more powerful, with a distinctive intensity and visual rhythm that feels entirely its own.

Fiery Colour, Layered Texture and Rhythmic Geometry

A Landscape of Colour and Movement

The upper portion of the artwork is an immersive field of deep crimson, fiery red, burnt orange, hint s of green and charcoal, interwoven with intricate layers of marks, scratches and textured passages.

Colours appear to surface and recede, creating a sense of depth and movement, as though something is unfolding beneath the surface.

There is a raw, earthy quality to these layers, balanced by flashes of warmth and luminosity that I hope draw the eye inward.

Beneath this expressive field, a series of fine horizontal bands introduces a transition into a more structured visual language.

The lower section features vivid red geometric forms, repeating diamond shapes, angular markings and an intricate interlocking border.

These patterns establish a strong rhythm across the composition, creating a striking contrast with the richly layered, more spontaneous textures above.

For me, the relationship between these two areas is what gives the work its particular character.

The upper field feels expansive and elemental, while the lower bands provide a sense of structure, repetition and momentum.

Together, they create a visual journey that moves between instinct and order, complexity and pattern. Chaos and order, the Jin and Jang.

A Continuing Exploration of Music and Visual Expression

Each artwork in this series has taken me in an unexpected direction, and Hózhó Nihí Déyá – In Beauty, We Travel feels like a significant moment in that journey.

The introduction of more pronounced geometric patterns continues an exploration of symbols and repetition that began with my previous work, Heart of the Matter.

I am interested in how marks, shapes and patterns can carry a sense of presence without requiring a fixed interpretation. Their meaning can remain open, allowing each viewer to discover personal associations and connections.

Here, the interplay of colour, texture and geometry creates an artwork that rewards both an immediate visual response and closer, more sustained observation.

Inspired by the music of R. Carlos Nakai, this work is not an illustration of a musical performance.

It is my own visual response to the music, developed through intuition, experimentation and a willingness to follow an idea beyond its original boundaries.
