Amsterdam Blue
My abstract artwork Amsterdam Blue - Cortège was inspired by the music of Jon Hassell, whose work has long fascinated me for its ability to create places that feel both real and imagined.
The inspiration came through his beautiful, dreamy tribute to one of his great influences, Chet Baker, Amsterdam, which originally appeared in Wim Wenders' film The Million Dollar Hotel.
As I listened, the music seemed to drift between memory, atmosphere and emotion, allowing colour, texture and movement to emerge intuitively across the surface.
For me, this work became less about illustrating music and more about responding to its mood.
Intense blues move through vivid greens, reds, yellows and deep shadows, creating a contemporary abstract composition filled with energy, rhythm and visual discovery.
Layers of marks, fragments, gestures and luminous colour suggest a world in constant motion, much like music itself, where different elements briefly come together before moving apart again.
