For the Term of His Natural Life

from $100.00

I have read Marcus Clarke’s powerful novel three times throughout my life. Yet when I began this work, I had no idea where the painting was heading, let alone what it would eventually be called. I followed the colour, texture, shapes and marks without trying to force an outcome. Only as the artwork neared completion did Clarke’s story unexpectedly return and take hold of my imagination. "For the Term of His Natural Life" is an abstract artwork shaped by memory, literature and the unpredictable nature of the creative process. Set against the brutal history of Van Diemen’s Land, For the Term of His Natural Life explores injustice, suffering, cruelty and the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit. The story of Richard Devine, wrongly convicted and transported to the colony, seemed to echo something within the darker layers and dramatic tensions of this work. The title arrived late, but once it did, I knew it belonged to the artwork. • Made from sustainably sourced materials • 340 gsm poly cotton blend with a matte/satin finish. Scratch, crack, & warp resistant. • 44 mm depth, 54 mm back width, and a 12 mm front width and gap. • Frames made from solid real wood. • Sawtooth hanging hardware included, comes pre-installed.
