As We Drift is a contemporary artwork created in response to the fourth track from Neither Present Nor Absent, the collaborative ambient album by experimental multi instrumentalist Steve Jansen and ambient artist Maiya Hershey.
While listening repeatedly to “As We Drift”, I allowed the music to guide the work rather than beginning with a predetermined image or idea. The result is an artwork built around atmosphere, movement and contrast.
The upper expanse is deliberately light and almost weightless, with delicate blues, whites, soft pinks and subtle traces of yellow emerging through layers of texture and scattered marks. Beneath this quiet space, a series of strong horizontal bands suddenly introduce structure, colour and rhythm.
The vivid lower section brings an unexpected energy to the otherwise contemplative surface, creating a tension between stillness and movement. That contrast is what makes As We Drift particularly adaptable to contemporary interiors.
Its softer upper field can sit comfortably within calm, minimal spaces, while the stronger bands of colour introduce a distinctive visual accent without overwhelming the room.
