The Making of Son of Science

I created this abstract artwork titled "Son of Science” which is a mixed media work that evolved slowly over an extended period, reaching completion only when the visual language I finally felt was in harmony with the music that inspired it.
The piece takes its title from Son of Science, the tenth and final track on my brother Andrew's album of the same name.
Throughout the creative process, I listened to this track repeatedly, allowing its layered soundscapes to guide my hand intuitively until I was happy with the composition, shapes/forms and colours.
In other words, rather than beginning with a fixed concept, I let the music shape the colours, textures and forms until the artwork found its own rhythm and balance.
Instrumental music has long been an essential part of my creative practice, helping me move beyond conscious thought and respond intuitively to tone, atmosphere and emotion.
The artwork as I mentioned above was inspired by Andrew’s electronica and progressive album, originally released on 8 August 2008. The ten-track recording blends ambient synthesis, drones and left-field electronic soundscapes into an immersive listening experience.
It still after all these years it remains one of my favorite albums that he has produced, and its atmosphere still after so many years continues to influence my visual work in the sandbox/studio.

Son of Science I believe stands as a tribute to the creative dialogue between music and the visual arts. A reminder that sound can become colour, rhythm can become form and inspiration often emerges through patient listening and intuition.
