"Black Surf #1 Painted with acrylics on Arches Aquarelle paper, 640 gsm.

This monochromatic acrylic painting on paper was inspired by The Voyage by Charles Baudelaire, a poem that explores the endless human desire to seek what lies beyond the horizon.

Rather than illustrating the poem, I wanted to respond to its emotional landscape, its sense of longing, uncertainty, and the irresistible pull toward the unknown.

Working exclusively in black and white, I challenged myself to discover the full expressive potential of a limited palette.

Layers of gestural brushwork, scraped textures, and shifting tonal values create a surface that moves between abstraction and suggestion.

Fragments emerge and dissolve like fleeting memories or distant forms glimpsed through turbulent water.

The painting evokes the energy of a restless sea without ever fully describing it. Light pushes through darkness, solid forms dissolve into atmosphere, and the composition hovers between chaos and calm.

This tension reflects Baudelaire's vision of the voyage, not simply as a physical journey across oceans, but as an inward passage through desire, imagination, and the perpetual search for meaning.

For me, poetry and painting share a common language. Both rely on rhythm, ambiguity, and emotional resonance rather than literal description.

This work is my visual conversation with Baudelaire's words, inviting the viewer to navigate their own course through its shifting depths.
